Jess’s legs began to ache as she hurried through the streets of Plumchester. Jax seemed tired too. Jess longed to go back to Bodkin Street to see if her mother had returned but she knew there wasn’t time. Mr Steen had probably thought of another long list of chores for her and Cook would need help preparing dinner.

She moved the loose railing and slipped back through the palace fence. Heavy clouds had drifted across the sky and the lake looked grey and cold.
